Keep its context.
The Hermès stamp decoder starts with a clear reading. Record the character, its surrounding shape and where it appears before exploring a possible production period.
First, record what you can actually see.
This release is an introductory reading guide. It does not provide automatic year lookup, image decoding or an authenticity result.
- Capture the context. Photograph the area around the mark as well as a close-up. Avoid rubbing, scraping or forcing the leather open.
- Record the shape. Note a circle, square, no visible border or an uncertain border. Faint lines and surrounding impressions can be misread.
- Transcribe the whole mark. Keep adjacent letters, numbers and symbols in your notes. Use a question mark for an unreadable character instead of guessing.
- Record the claimed model and era separately. Do not let a seller’s date influence what you believe the photograph says.
Broad eras, not a certificate.
Secondary-market references commonly organize date marks into these eras. This is a general orientation, not an official Hermès verification service.

A letter may recur across eras. A border, location and wider construction context can help frame a question, but cannot independently verify the bag.
What a plausible reading leaves unanswered.
A date-compatible mark does not establish who made the bag, whether components have been replaced or whether a receipt belongs to it. It is one part of an evidence file.
Is the date stamp a unique serial number?
Do not treat it as a unique item identifier. Record the complete group of marks and distinguish date context from other markings.
What if I cannot find or read a stamp?
Record the result as unresolved. Ask for a wider image and a second lighting angle. Missing or unreadable evidence is not itself a counterfeit finding.
Can I use a year chart to settle authenticity?
No. A chart can suggest a period for an interpreted mark. It does not validate the physical bag, and an incorrect reading can make the comparison misleading.
