Hermès Kelly Inspection & Evidence Guide

Identify the claim before the detail.

Hermès describes the Kelly collection through its distinctive design codes and variations. An official collection page helps establish the family, but it is not a specification archive for every historical bag.

This is a PieceID preparation guide for a claimed Hermès Kelly. It does not examine an item, run an image analysis or provide an authenticity probability. Its purpose is to help you preserve evidence and ask more specific questions.

Your evidence checklist

Keep the original photographs alongside your notes. For every observation, record its source, date and limitations. Describe what is visible before deciding what it might mean.

Identify the version: Record the seller’s exact model name, size and construction description, including whether Sellier or Retourné is claimed. Do not compare two photographs as if all Kelly versions have the same structure.
Photograph the silhouette: Capture front, back, side and base with the bag resting naturally. Keep the handle and flap visible. Note whether stuffing, handling or perspective could affect the shape you see.
Document seams and edges: Photograph corner construction and a continuous seam on both sides. Ask the seller to clarify the claimed construction instead of inferring the whole model from one cropped edge.
Inspect the handle and strap evidence: Include the top handle, attachment areas and any supplied strap and fittings. Record accessories as separate objects; their presence or absence does not resolve the bag’s origin.
Capture the closure in context: Request a photograph of the front closure followed by close-ups of the plates, turn-lock and markings. Reflections can hide detail. Ask for another angle before describing a mark as absent.
Record leather and interior: Document exterior texture, flap underside, pockets and lining under neutral light. Keep the claimed leather name separate from what a photo actually shows.
Read the complete stamp: Include adjacent marks, the surrounding shape and the part of the bag where the stamp was found. Do not press, scrape or force an opening to make a faint mark more readable.
Connect documents and repairs: Build a timeline of claimed purchase, service and alterations. A repair may explain a visible difference, but a repair story is also a claim that needs supporting evidence.

A difference is a question to investigate.

Use three separate labels in your notes: observed, unresolved and needs specialist review. Reserve “consistent” for a specific comparison with an identified source, not a conclusion about the whole item.

First check the claimed construction, size and comparison period. A difference without context is a question, not a verdict.

A supplied strap looks newer than the bag

Record the strap separately and ask whether it is original, replaced or purchased later.

The stamp is partly obscured

Keep the reading unresolved and request a clearer context photo. Do not fill in missing characters from the seller’s claimed date.

When uncertainty matters to a purchase, pause the decision until the missing evidence can be obtained or a qualified specialist can review the item. Do not average unknowns into a confidence score.

Common questions

Should every Kelly look the same?

No single reference photograph covers every version and condition. State which construction and period your comparison is intended to represent, and leave unmatched details unresolved.

Can a replaced accessory establish the bag’s authenticity?

No. An accessory and the bag need separate consideration. Record replacement claims and supporting documents without allowing them to stand in for an inspection of the bag.
