Rolex distinguishes the Submariner and Submariner Date within the collection. Start by recording the exact reference claimed for your watch; do not apply specifications from a current collection page to every earlier example.
This is a PieceID preparation guide for a claimed Rolex Submariner. It does not examine an item, run an image analysis or provide an authenticity probability. Its purpose is to help you preserve evidence and ask more specific questions.
Your evidence checklist
Keep the original photographs alongside your notes. For every observation, record its source, date and limitations. Describe what is visible before deciding what it might mean.
- Record the reference claim
- Ask for the exact reference and claimed production period. Distinguish the model/reference from an individual serial identifier. Avoid publishing full identifiers with listing photographs.
- Capture the dial straight-on
- Use a well-lit photograph with hands positioned to reveal text where possible. Note the date display or its absence, dial text and visible markers as observations to compare against the claimed reference.
- Document bezel and insert
- Capture the whole bezel and close views of its markings. Record wear, reflections and any replacement claim. Do not treat a colour difference between screens as a confirmed material mismatch.
- Include case and crown profiles
- Photograph each side, lugs, crown and caseback without removing components. Surface finishing may have been altered during service; photos alone do not establish original dimensions or pressure resistance.
- Record bracelet and clasp
- Request full bracelet views plus legible clasp and end-link details where accessible. Compare the claimed bracelet configuration with documentary support and ask about replacement parts.
- Keep identifiers private
- Record visible identifiers privately and ask a specialist to check their relationship to the watch. A valid-looking number or a matching warranty card does not independently verify a physical item.
- Ask for service and movement evidence
- Use a qualified watchmaker for internal inspection. Request the scope, date and findings of any service, including replaced components. Do not open the case for this checklist.
- Separate condition from identity
- Note polishing, damage, modifications and operating problems separately. Even a watch consistent with its claimed reference may need service; a visual match is not a water-resistance test.
A difference is a question to investigate.
Use three separate labels in your notes: observed, unresolved and needs specialist review. Reserve “consistent” for a specific comparison with an identified source, not a conclusion about the whole item.

Check whether the watch is an earlier reference or has documented service parts. Request a period-appropriate source.
Papers and visible numbers appear to agree
Record the agreement and the source of both observations. The physical watch, the paperwork and their relationship still need review.
The watch is described as waterproof
Do not test it in water. Ask for a recent pressure-test record appropriate to the intended use.
When uncertainty matters to a purchase, pause the decision until the missing evidence can be obtained or a qualified specialist can review the item. Do not average unknowns into a confidence score.
Repair can change the evidence—without making the item fake.
Separate origin, current configuration, condition and intervention history. A disclosed repair is different from an unexplained mismatch.
Service dial or hands
Legitimate service parts can be newer than the case and may affect collectability. Record the part and service date.
Case polishing
Refinishing may remove scratches but also alter edges and surface geometry. Request the scope before approval.
Mixed bracelet or clasp
A replacement or period-mismatched assembly needs explanation; it is not automatically counterfeit and should not be hidden.
Common questions
Does a matching serial number settle the question?
No. Record it as an identifier supplied or observed, and have the watch and its documents assessed together. A copied identifier can look plausible.
Can photographs confirm water resistance?
No. External photographs do not establish the condition of seals or case integrity. Ask a qualified watchmaker about testing before water exposure.
