Read the whole construction, not one detail.
Build an evidence file around the claimed size, material, hardware and period before comparing quilting, chain, closure, markings or serial-related features.
Configuration comes before comparison.
“Classic Flap” is often used broadly in listings. Record the seller’s exact claim: model name, size, leather, hardware colour, construction, purchase period and whether any part was repaired or replaced.
This guide does not authenticate an item or claim that one feature proves origin. It helps you capture comparable photographs and separate direct observations from seller statements and unresolved questions.
Your evidence checklist
- Claim and source
- Save the original listing, receipt images and seller messages. Write down which details came from each source instead of merging them into one assumed identity.
- Silhouette and dimensions
- Photograph front, back, sides, base and open profile. Include a scale for dimensions; stuffing, wear and camera angle can change apparent proportions.
- Quilting and panel alignment
- Capture full panels and transitions at the flap, pocket and seams. Describe alignment and wear without treating one interrupted line as a verdict.
- Leather and edge finish
- Photograph texture in diffuse light plus a macro view. Note conditioning, refinishing and repairs, which can change gloss, grain and edge appearance.
- Chain, strap and attachments
- Record the entire strap, leather interlacing, attachment points and wear. Compare only with a well-defined configuration from a relevant period.
- Closure and hardware
- Photograph the turn-lock, underside, screws and metal finish in context. Reflections, plating wear and replacement parts can create misleading differences.
- Interior and markings
- Capture the lining, pockets, brand markings, country wording and any serial-related feature without cropping away its location or surrounding construction.
- Provenance and service
- Record purchase, repair and ownership documents separately. Redact private data and confirm that dates, model description and physical configuration do not conflict.
Use an evidence matrix, not a tally.
Label each note as observed, source-dependent, unresolved or specialist review. Ten matching-looking details copied from the same online comparison are not ten independent pieces of evidence.
The serial-related feature looks plausible
Record only what is visible and the claimed period. A plausible identifier can be copied, moved or paired with an unrelated item.
The quilting does not line up perfectly
Document the exact transition, camera angle, wear and repair history. Decide whether a relevant, period-aware comparison is available before interpreting it.
The receipt appears genuine
Treat the document and its connection to the physical bag as separate questions. Confirm model, date and configuration consistency.
Common questions
Can one interior mark authenticate a Classic Flap?
No. It is one observation within a configuration. Identity, construction, provenance and any service history still need independent review.
Does older hardware have to match a current boutique example?
No. Materials, components and specifications can vary by period and configuration. Use a source relevant to the exact claim.
